Conservation & Process Improvement
P&G has a strong history of reducing the environmental footprint and cost of our operations. Our production-adjusted footprints have been dramatically reduced since 2002, with such sustainability-driven reductions also resulting in significant cost savings.

To deliver these results, operating site personnel and staff resources from across our business have worked under a common Product Supply Sustainability approach. By combining our efforts into a single approach, we have been able to reapply our successful operations more systematically.
At the facility level, Site Sustainability Leaders identify opportunities to reduce P&G’s impact across four environmental footprints: waste, water, energy, and CO2. These Site Sustainability Leaders recruit a steering team from within their site, with representatives from the various businesses at the site, as well as Jones Lang LaSalle, our property management partner, and Site Safety. Once they deploy objectives for footprint reductions, the steering team develops an action plan with prioritized ideas to meet those objectives, and facilitates the execution of plans. The steering team generally meets monthly. Teams of “Champions” volunteer on site to work toward achieving the objectives. The steering team is responsible for communicating results back to the site.
The following are examples of results achieved by these teams.
Reducing Energy, Water and CO2

Energy
The Timisoara Plant delivered significant 37% Energy reduction through 1) usage control monitoring, 2) condensate recovery, 3) compressed air system upgrade, frequency drives, and chiller heat recovery.
Water
The Cologne Plant delivered 17% reduction in water consumption. In additional to their water conservation efforts, the site also installed innovation technology for emptying/ cleaning of piping system enabling water usage reductions.
CO2
The Kansas City Plant significantly reduced CO2 emissions due to transportation. Instead of using tank trucks, the site now uses rail and a dedicated fleet of containers to transport dishwashing detergent concentrate to the Mexico City plant. In 6 months, the site reduced CO2 emissions by 260 tons.
